Central heating by electricity: heatpumps
An air-source (in the picture) heat pump heats the house by using electricity. It replaces the gas central- heating boiler. Indeed, the heat-pump firm will take the boiler away with them! Since gas produces CO2 when burnt, this really cuts your domestic emissions of carbon dioxide massively! It’s best of course in combination with using a renewables-only electricity-supplier. A heat pump does cost money but then a climate-emergency is a climate-emergency. To help, the government does (July 2020) provide a subsidy. Heat pumps come in three types. The picture shows a air-sourced one. A second type uses a lattice of pipes sunk a spit or so into the lawn (if you have one) while the third involves boring down (it is not as far down as you might think ! ) to the hot – well, pleasantly-warm – strata below. Then cold water gets pumped down only to return pleasantly warm! Marvellous!
